The transformation of a basement laundry room

A typical feature of central European apartment blocks in the twentieth century was a collective laundry room for all inhabitants. This project converted the traditional laundry room into a small studio for rent. The former space remains open. The background condenses the centre of the layout – a passage way between the closed boxes of the kitchen and cloakroom provides perspective and distance to the view of the entering visitor into the open space, separating the entrance area with the bathroom, located behind the central load-bearing wall. The cleared space hides the heating elements in the niches below the windows and the original pipes of the basement corridor above the slatted ceiling. The original reinforced concrete ceiling beneath the living floors of the house remains exposed.

The space was designed to be rented for massage, hairdressing, beauty and similar services.
